Haiti Opposition Burns Coffin of President

    Words and photos: Matt Vecere

Last week, the political opposition to Haiti's president, Michel Martelly, marched to the US embassy to call on Obama to stop supporting him. Today, they attempted to march on the Dominican Republic embassy to express their distaste for the country's recent deportation policy changes. The crowd was met by riot police and United Nations peacekeeping forces, known by the acronym MINUSTAH, at the entrance to Petionville.

The opposition crowd only numbered approximately 100, and there was no confrontation. The protestors burned a coffin with "aba Martelly" (down with Martelly) and "Martelly vole" (Martelly steals) spray painted on it.
