    Visage Tourmenté - Picasso

The visage tourmenté of Pablo Picasso was the key piece among the 172 lots put up for sale, regarded for its rarity and the fact that it was created by one of the most influential artists of the 20th century. It had been kept away from public gaze for 40 years, and news about its auction generated a buzz and put the spotlight on Picasso's ceramic work as well as his use of gold as an artistic medium.

The Gold Visage Tourmenté is a 22 carat gold plate that was valued in the six-figure number. It weighs more than 2.5 kg and has the distinction of being one of the very few artworks Picasso created using the yellow metal. In fact, he has not used used precious metals as a medium in his lifetime of innovative artistry. The Picasso Visage Tourmenté is one of the 19 designs he created with famous goldsmith Francois Hugo. It is also the only one that uses gold, the rest being carved out of silver. In the 70's, the past owner of the gold platter, after realizing its worth, bought it directly from Hugo. There has been no news or sightings of the platter until the latest auction.

The artistic collaboration between Picasso and Hugo spawned into a lasting friendship. Inspired by the Gold Visage Tourmenté, Picasso went on to create more designs incorporating jewel-like medallions and used gold as a medium in his humorous sculpture Centaur Phallique II.
