A Song for Sandy Hook: "Garden of Angels" ~ Midst The Sickness and Insanity ... One Flame of Humanity
One year ago, December 14, 2012, Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, CT was rocked by the mass shooting and loss of 20 first-graders and six educators. An unimaginable tragedy and loss of human life.
A Vancouver, BC - based singer and pianist, I was on a cruise ship at the time of the tragedy, on a performance contract cruising Mexico and Hawaii. One reality of ship life is that there is no separation between your personal and professional life. You live with your colleagues and your audience. In this environment, where guests vacation and celebrate, you never talk religion, politics, news, anything controversial and certainly not anything as sad as the Sandy Hook shooting.
So, by day, I stayed in my cabin and watched on TV the horror of events unfold, and by night, was out entertaining guests, as if nothing had happened, as we all just carried along on our ship vacation in paradise.
Consequently, as my own catharsis, I would return to the piano in the wee hours of the night, a quiet place where I began to write my song, “Garden of Angels.” An Anthem honoring the victims, residents and surrounding community of Sandy Hook, and a call to action for all humanity, this song was inspired by the victims of Sandy Hook, the grieving families and friends, as well as by the outpouring of kindness shown from around the globe. While incredibly saddened by the tragedy, I was deeply moved by the courageous spirit and resilience shown by the Newtown community during a time of great pain, and also by the acts of humanity from the international community. It became clear to me that midst the sickness and insanity, there was one flame of humanity working in the world today. This became the “theme of hope” in my song, “Garden of Angels”.
100% of my proceeds from on-line digital downloads of “Garden of Angels” will be donated to Sandy Hook Promise, a charity organization whose dual mandate is doing meaningful work in healing its community and effecting positive change for safer communities and a safer country.
"Garden of Angels" is dedicated to those victims who lost their lives at Sandy Hook Elementary School on December 14, 2012.
