The Racialism Of Teaching English in China

As the English saying “do not judge a book by its cover”

Have been living in Shenzhen for several months, and we have got a big problem of finding teaching job here. The main reason is racism. From kinder garden to university, 99% of people always looking for White dudes, who’s even not native speaker; this kind of rule already become a trend from training center to International school. Whenever pass the interview and demo class, those schools still have their “reasons” to not giving enough hours or not hiring sea turtle and banana. Thousands of those people can speak good English and knowing the culture different according teaching English as a second language. Perhaps this society needs another “Martin Luther King” to come out and have the famous speech “I have a dream” to wake those parents up. At the western countries, it has less this kind of issues, but China does not have a good system and law to protect this thing happened. At least in the English teaching market can’t show the benefit for Asian faces. Why the white face are always having bigger shoulder above Chinese Asian. Most of parents are expecting white guys can speak Chinese rather than just hiring a sea turtle or bilingual banana. In the English training market, sea turtle and banana suppose have more advantages on it. However, some Asian American who graduated from Ivy League Universities, but the parents will not allow them to teach English to their kids, on the other hand, they would like their kids learn how to get into those schools from them. No matter how many sea turtles and bananas as qualify teachers here, because of the “rule” which makes most of sea turtle and banana end up to running a training center instead teaching.

Chinese people are crazy about foreign stuff, which shows they are worshiping everything from foreign counties. Especially in Shekou area the local government even selects this place to build houses, school, supermarkets, bars, and restaurants for foreigners. One good example can be traveling in Shenzhen, people better speak in English more than Chinese, because people who speak English will be treated much nicer, such as asking for help and location. Even those security guards ask for sign up to get into the village, if the someone holds Asian face with foreign passport or identification card, they are attitudes will be 180 degree different, even does not need to sign up or write down any info either. It seems foreign passport and ID can be any passes for those kinds of “high level” places. Somehow, even the social statues are also very different between Chinese and foreigner. For instance, to sign up a membership as join a club; usually just need write down some personal information and some fee, however, one “international” club, which also accept people from all over the world except Chinese. One of the rules is non-PRC passport holder or their spouses holding foreign passport as well, although, green card holder also not qualify to join. Is it China not belongs to this world? Some people said those rules were set by the Chinese government, but can it does not make any senses at all.

Parent is one of the main problem makes this thing keep happening, due to more than 95% parents want their children become “dragon of the human being”, which means become genius, can fit in every corners. Because of parents, most of Chinese children already start working overtime from their childhood. During some professor’s investigation, which tells children should not be develop their intelligence quotient at their early age; children should keep their innocence at childhood, not become as busy as bee. A lot of parents put their kids join different kinds of after class events, and English training always on the list. Learning a foreign language should let kids have fun and interested, should not focus on exam. However, the Chinese education system, which basically for passing tests, does not fit most of teaching styles that holding by foreign teachers. Except oral test, student can choose the correct answer without understand the complete question.

At the last, the Chinese government finally made a decision to change the rule on the high school exam, which makes English become less important as past. Maybe it’s about the time to make the English training market different.
