    Above the clouds

We spent Christmas and New Year's 2012 traveling through Costa Rica. Arena in the North, to see the volcano and enjoy the hot springs, Puerto Viejo on the Caribbean side for the culture, food, and animal sanctuaries, and Dominical on the Atlantic side for surf, sand, and hiking.

We were brave (or crazy!) enough to travel from coast to coast in one day, and what a day it was! Nine hours in the car, but we experienced some of the most incredible scenery I’ve ever seen; lush green fields, endless banana plantation, coffee plantation, and small colorful towns dotted along the way.

When we were more than half way between coasts, we passed through Chirripó National Park, which is massive, and encompasses parts of three provinces in Costa Rica. At one point, our hiking GPS read that our little Nissan rental was almost 12,000 feet up! The sun was beginning to set, and as we turned a bend, I yelled for us to stop the car. We were up so high that the clouds were below us, and with the colors of the sunset, it was beautiful. We were wearing clothes fit for the heat of the Caribbean side of Costa Rica, and not for the wind and cold we experienced, but it was amazing. I snapped a few photographs of the setting sun, the mountains and the clouds, and this shot, by far, is my favorite.
