This iReport is part of an assignment:
Living with autism |
Autism In Small Town America
This picture is of my autistic son in his class at school, you guessed it the school is teaching the kids the fine art of the culinary profession.
The class or the "in house restaurant" is called "The Little Red Hen".
The kids are not only taught cooking skills but how to communicate by being waiters . They learn how to set a table, they make place mates every week to keep with the changing theme .
Through out the weekday they, as a class working together , thumb through cookbooks and bring to class special recipes from home to prepare for the big finale on Friday where they prepare there hard work for the public to enjoy , of course allowing the kids to interact with the public and strangers which is so important.
The food is all made from scratch. Federal funding is used to buy the groceries, and local farmers sometime help by donating fresh fruits and vegetables which has helped my son with eating healthy.
Our schools are in trouble and this vocational class has worked miracles for my son and the other kids and hate to see this class get cut out of the school curriculum!
This picture and a story about the program made our small town Madras Oregon newspaper "The Bulletin" .
To visit the schools web site please go to

Wont you drop them a email telling them how important such a program is for are autistic children and all the children in this class! The skills they are learning will teach them the skills for real life work in the food industry!
Thank you!!
