    Farewell to 5PTZ-NYC

CNN PRODUCER NOTE     Rachel Cauvin took one last walk through of New York City's graffiti haven 5 Pointz, a warehouse area in the Long Island City section of Queens, which once featured the work of street artists. Recently, parts of 5 Pointz were whitewashed after developers decided to turn the warehouse into high-end condos. Cauvin says she felt sad taking her last tour of the graffiti mecca. 'I loved going to that place and talking to some of the artist if they were there doing a new mural,' she said. 'I am hoping that these artists will find a new place to showcase their work.'
    - Jareen, CNN iReport producer

My love of street /graffiti art usually takes me all over NYC looking for new work. One of the places that I loved to go to was what some have called the Graffiti Mecca- 5PTZ located in Long Island City, NY. This empty warehouse has been used for years as a canvas by graffiti artist with the developer’s permission to paint on the outside of the building. I have been going there every couple of months for the past few years to see new works since they usually change very often.

Artist from all over the world have been coming there to paint their amazing murals and to everyone’s surprise the landlord decided that the warehouse will finally come down to make way for a new residential high-rise. Without any warning painters were hired to whitewash the outside of the building one night. Every single mural was gone in a flash.

I decided to take a last look at the place as a way to say farewell to 5PTZ. Driving toward the building last weekend made me very sad to see that is was truly gone. The yellow colorful building that has attracted graffiti lovers from all over the world was now just a warehouse in ruins with ugly white paint over what used to be graffiti. I am glad I was able to see all the great art work done throughout the years and take so many photos of amazing murals.
