Ringing the Bells of Joy and Singing Carols……All for a Cause!!!
Last year many of our moms came up with the idea of reviving the age-old Christmas tradition of singing Christmas carols in the neighbourhood. We had two motives in mind- to bring about the spirit of the Christmas season and also to raise funds on the way for the miserable and the unfortunate who are not lucky enough to enjoy the Christmas season.
Last year, a group of us- adults and children, from Al Maskan Building(Karama, Dubai), went around the neighbourhood, knocking doors and asking, “Shall we sing some Christmas carols in your house?” At same time we also collected donations from the people to give for a charitable cause. And to our delight almost everyone replied in the affirmative. The money collected was given for the typhoon victims of Philippines. So the first year went well.
This year, the event was bigger and better. With around 15 singers and a guitarist, we went around singing to the famous Christmas melodies of Silent Night, Mary’s Boy Child, O Come All Ye Faithful, The First Nowell, Rudolph the Red- Nosed Reindeer, Jingle Bells, Feliz Navidad and many more. A lot of effort was put in during the practice sessions which were there during the past 1 week, till the time we performed on Saturday 20th and Sunday 21st. We collected a great deal of money, even more than last year. This would be given for the unfortunate and unlucky children of Syria, who are going through a tough time.
This ‘carol-singing event’ gave us children and adults alike an opportunity to use our talents for the benefit of others. In the beginning, when we kick started this event last year, we were not very assured of our success. But last year and this year, looking at the overwhelming response of the people, we felt, “Yes, we can do it.” The fact that we are entertaining others and enlivening the season’s spirit complements very well with the idea of collecting funds for those who desperately yearn for a joyous time.
As ages pass, lifestyles change and needs grow. But traditions of the golden yester years will never change and will never die, as it is such age- old practices that retain the true meaning and spirit of celebrating during a joyous season. This is a time where we can live and let others live, where we can celebrate and be generous to reach out to the world.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to All!!!!
