Participating in a volunteer work
On 2013 November, I went to Ishinomaki city, Miyagi prefecture as a volunteer. Miyagi, Fukushima and Iwate are located in north Japan and these are suffered the most from earthquake and tsunami. We visited Ishinomaki’s harbor. This place is also got the damage and some of people died or lost their house by tsunami. My volunteer work is to help fisherman. They raise oysters and they’re not only raising oysters, but also processing and shipping on their own. Our main volunteer work is to clean the shells. The work is simple, but large quantities of oysters are involved. Finally end of the work, we are very tired and we realize the hardness of working. Almost all fishermen are elderly people, so they feel more physical fatigue. Recently, their life and work is becoming composed and crops of oyster also become stable. However, some of fishermen live in temporary housing. They commute from the long distances. They’re also worrying about fishing’s future.
Participating in this volunteer, I felt that it is necessary to need more help in north Japan still now. Around the center of Japan, Japanese are living now, but north of Japan is suffering from and having a big obstacle and hardships with their life. In addition, I could know the value of food. I often forget how much I owe to our food. We should be more thankful of produces of labor.
