Leon Robinson: Being The Best Him That He Can Be

He was “ JT” in “ The Five Heartbeats, “ Russell” in “ Waiting To Exhale” and played in many of the classics. Yes, ladies, I’m talking Leon Robinson actually known as Leon! His smile captivates many but his talent truly shines through. I had the pleasure of interviewing him and we had the best conversation. I got the inside scoop! I know you must be thinking where has he been? Trust me, Leon is still around and doing a lot. He has his own group called “ Leon and The Peoples”, and still acting. He is here to stay I promise you.

I started watching Leon when I saw him in the music video “ Like A Prayer” a song by the legendary Madonna. I had always loved the song, but the video was awesome because Leon was the male lead. I asked Leon, “ How was it working with Madonna?” Leon states, “ Working with Madonna was great. She was very sweet, generous and fun to be around.” Leon began acting, according to his mother, when he was four years old. I bet he was quite the character. He started acting when he was in college on a basketball scholarship. When he said this I was very surprised because I never knew that Leon played the sport. One of his friends asked him to be in one of his movies. His first answer was, “ Well, why me?” The person responded, “ He liked the way that Leon carried himself and acted in public.” Leon states, “ I felt very comfortable doing the film.” Since then Leon has been in several films such as Above The Rim, Cliffhanger, Cool Running’s (such a classic), The Women Of Brewster’s Place and more. He even had a cameo in the film, B.A.P.S. Y’all remember the infamous scene when Halle Berry spots Leon as he plays himself and jumps in his arms. I’ll just say Halle was lucky! Halle, I want to exhale too!

One of my absolute favorite movies that Leon plays in is “ The Five Heartbeats”. I mean JT was and is still the man! There is a little rumor going around saying that there is going to be a part two. Of course I asked Leon about the alleged film and he says while laughing, “ You’re going to have to ask my brother “Duck”. But if there is a part 2 coming, Leon will definitely play his role. His words were, “ Come one now, of course I’ll be in it.” My favorite scene in the movie is when…well I won’t spoil it for those who haven’t seen it yet. I’m telling you, you have no idea what you are missing. I must give a shout out to Robert Townsend and Keenen Ivory Wayans you guys wrote a great script! As a screenwriter myself, I truly love the creativity you guys had when writing the script and the cast couldn’t have been a better one!

What other talents does he have? Well, Leon has his own music group! Yes, “Leon and The Peoples”! When doing my research, I came across one of the music videos. Sadly to say, I didn’t know he had a group. When I asked how long his group had been out, Leon said, it’s been over ten years. Now being a new fan of his group I will say that I loved the song and video “ Life Is A Funny Game”. The lyrics are powerful and the video is realistic. I saw a familiar face in the video as well Ms. Vivica Fox! Leon and The Peoples have been traveling around the country and they are currently putting out singles! Speaking of singles, “ Love Is A Beautiful Thing” is one of singles and let me tell you it’s very powerful and sends a positive message especially for our youth in my opinion. If you haven’t heard it purchase it on I-tunes! Leon and the peoples will be touring again soon in the upcoming year.

Leon also went to the school of the arts and learned a lot about acting and music. One of the things that stood out to me the most from our interview was that he stated he didn’t have a hard transition from film to music. Leon says, “ If you sing, you sing, if you act, you act. When actors are acting, they are portraying different parts on screen so why wouldn’t they have more then one talent.” After he said that I thought, “ You know what, he’s absolutely right!”

His career isn’t just about his movie and music. Leon inspires others to follow their dream. I asked him what advice did he have for aspiring authors and he responds with, “ Truly apply yourself, you really have to work hard to be the best that you can be and also be the best you that you can be.” What a great way to pay it forward. I must say that I can’t wait to see the new films that he’s doing. He will be in a romantic drama called “ And Then It Was You” with Grant White and Lynn Whitfield, a film titled “ Soul Ties”, and “ I Really Need My Ex” and he just wrapped a film that will be coming out soon! I asked Leon what was his favorite movie that he’s done and he says, “ The movie that you like the most is my favorite movie. I make movies for you the fans, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.”

I really enjoyed interviewing Leon. He is humble, genuine and an all around great guy. We laughed and had great conversation that it didn’t feel like an interview at all! His movies are memorable and his voice is captivating . This is one person that sincerely loves all that he does! As he continues to follow his dreams, I will always be a fan.

“ A lot of songs are made, a lot of movies are made, but there are very few that we remember.”~ Leon

Leon’s music can be found on I-tunes.
