    Christmas at St. Peter's

"The people that walked in darkness has seen a great light..." Pope Francis began his homily with words from the first reading, taken from the book of the prophet Isaiah. The words sum up what the coming of Jesus has brought to the world: light. And so aptly the world celebrates with the lights that brighten our Christmas celebrations.

After the Pope's Mass at Christmas night in St. Peter's Basilica, I spent a few moments enjoying the sights and sounds of Christmas at St. Peter's Square. The cold air of winter was pleasant. People exchanged greetings and gathered around the huge Christmas Tree and the Nativity scene. And yes, light illumined the faces of those who gathered and stayed to share this with one another.
