    Embracing Winter: Minnesota Style

CNN PRODUCER NOTE     nicoleeis says there is a place in Cold Spring, Minnesota, where she likes to escape to during the winter season. It's a frozen lake behind her grandparents' house, which she loves ice skating on. 'I think everyone in Minnesota goes out on the lake. It is the land of 10,000 lakes and during the winter season they all freeze over,' she said.
    - Jareen, CNN iReport producer

My dad is the oldest of six from Cold Spring, Minnesota. His family has been there for years and every year the family gathers at my grandparents' home on Big Watab Lake to celebrate the holidays. Unfortunately my dad and our family, being military, never lived in Minnesota. We lived for the longest amount of time in the Florida Keys and every winter break our family would travel up north to freeze to death. The first day was always the hardest, but we soon got used to it. When all 6 brothers and sisters are there with their children, 10 of us in total, it is absolutely chaotic. To escape the chaos we all head out to the lake to blow of energy by ice fishing, ice skating, or just playing in the snow. Some of my best Christmas memories are from being on that lake at Christmas time. I used to spend hours out there ice skating, which is my favorite winter activity. Then when it was all said and done we all went inside to warm up and usually eat. It is truly some of the best family time you can ask for.
