    ......Vampire DVR's.....

    One of the most energy using devices in your home is your DVR. DVR's use about half the energy as your home fridge does. It uses almost the same amount of electricity when "off" as when on. The primary reason for that is the harddrive that is the heart of DVR's. BY programming these harddrives to not spin when not in use they can save 15-20% of the energy they use. Another approach would be for cable companies to move all their harddrives out of the home and let folks draw videos directly from the provider's cloud.
