Two South Africans take on aliens

Port Elizabeth, South Africa - Two filmmakers from South Africa recently produced an advert for the Doritos "Crash the Superbowl" competition and made it into the finals. They are competing for a prize of $1 million and the chance of a lifetime to work with Marvel Studios on the set of The Avengers: Age of Ultron.

Brett Gieseke and Kevin Meiring from Port Elizabeth are the only South African entry to have made it into the top 25. Their entry based on the Doritos slogan "For the Bold" takes place in space and has an interesting "punch" line. It took a month's brainstorming which led them to finally opt for the "peace offering" concept. With a makeshift green screen and a Canon 5D camera, they filmed and edited the advert with only a few hours to spare.

Meiring is the main character in the video where he appears as an astronaut and Gieseke as an alien. The space suit that Meiring wears in the video took over a month to make.

Early in 2013 Kevin Meiring scooped an international award as a co-creator for a short movie in the SpongeBob SquareShorts: Original Fan Tributes competition. The movie about a dedicated SpongeBob SquarePants fan won him $2 500 and a trip to Universl Studios in Los Angeles.

Meiring and Gieseke are confident that they will do well in the finals. People can still vote for them until December 31. 2013. According to a media release five finalists will be selected and the rest of the world will be invited to vote for the best advert. Ultimately two adverts will air during the Super Bowl broadcast - one will be selected by the fans and the other by the Doritos Brand.
