Els Enfarinats: Revellers stage flour war in Alicante

CNN PRODUCER NOTE     Photojournalist Jose Miguel Fernandez de Velasco dodged flying eggs, flour and firecrackers at the annual Els Enfarinats festival, which takes place on December 28 in the small town of Ibi, Spain. The flour festival is a mock coup d’état – the Els Enfarinats take over the town and declare ridiculous laws while a group called La Oposicio fights to restore order. The festival is a tradition that’s more than 200 years old.

“It was insane, the biggest problem was that the flour came into his eyes and nose,” said Fernandez de Velasco. “The most effective way to keep the camera safe is to be stored inside plastic bag with a hole for the lens.”

As far as capturing these action shots, the photographer gave two tips: use a wide angle lens and predict the action!

Every year on December 28, the small town of Ibi, Alicante, holds the 'els Enfarinats', the Flour Festival. Revellers celebrate this winter festival in a mock battle throwing flour and eggs at each other during a staged 'coup d'état'.
