With the bangs of the firecrackers ricocheting off buildings in a deafening spectacle which lasted 10 minutes, Melbourne welcomed 2014.

Throughout the night, the fireworks were fired from 22 sites across the city. Green and gold fireworks detonated at midnight and lightened the Melbourne skyline to the shouts of joyful revellers.

Crimson fireworks roared like thunder trailed by shots of shooting stars.

The camera, smartphones and tablets were out, recording the $3 million spectacle, which took more than seven tonnes of fireworks and 44 technicians to launch.

This year was a new shade, "a beautiful gold colour" manufactured by the City of Melbourne, wowed the crowd as the fireworks lit up Melbourne CBD in all of its splendour to the shouts of collective appreciation.

For the first time this year, Melbourne's fireworks display was specifically designed from anywhere in the city.
