This iReport is part of an assignment:
    Does marijuana help you?

is smoking weed a choice of life or an addiction?

My boyfriend of 2 years has been smoking pot since he was in high school. He smokes since the moment he wakes up until the moment he goes to sleep. I never really had a problem with it until now. Lately, I have been reading many articles about what marijuana does to your brain and the majority of them agreed that alcohol is more dangerous and causes more damage than weed. I have never really criticized him for his marijuana addiction because I thought it was harmless and his prerogative; However, just like him, I have been on complete denial of how detrimental and damaging any type of addition can be for any human being. Weather destroying your lungs with Tabaco, getting into debt with a shopping addition, or avoiding reality with drugs, any type of addition is always going to lead to a spiral down to destruction. By now he has built resistance to it and doesn’t really get high anymore, but when he does, his facial expressions, motor skills and judgment transform into a slow motion nightmare. Almost like an idiot stage of mind.
There have been many incidents when his high has taken over his whole rational thinking and will; for example, one night when I was making spaghetti, I accidentally dropped the pot with hot water burning my arms and making a big mess; all of his roommates came to my rescue except for him, he just lay on the sofa all zombied out looking at me without any reaction. That night I realized that marijuana wasn’t harmless or inoffensive like many people who consume it said, especially if it is smoked in large amounts.
Once I read in an article that many artist, musicians, and writers use marijuana for inspiration… why do people need to get high in order to create great things in life?
Sometimes I wonder if smoking weed is almost like being a Muslim or Catholic, like being a democrat or a republican, like being a surgeon or a teacher… is smoking weed a choice of living? Something people has to respect as a form of how you want to live your life? Something you cannot be discriminated against to?
In my opinion, when a person chooses something in life that is going to be harmful to them or to others in the short or long run, it should not be permitted. Unless it is use for medical purpose.
Humans have a history of having a hard time controlling cravings. So there is not such a thing as moderation when it comes to drugs or anything that can have an additive component.
I only wish we humans could live our lives and face our problems without swallowing a jar of Xanax for anxiety, or smoking a joint to feel relax and get inspiration.
