DES and the embryo's vulnerability!
Early embryogenesis is a time when metabolically active fetal cells are delicately programmed to enter the organogenetic (organ forming) phase of development. Such cells are extremely dependent on and thus vulnerable to changes in milieu. Temperature, oxygen tension, pH changes, metabolic demands and, especially, hormonal requirements, are absolutely critical. During the first 14 weeks, drugs of any nature, any dose, or any duration of administration are potentially dangerous..... Their effects may immediately destructive (abortion), oar soon visible (genetic defects seen at birth), or they may be detectable much later in life (teen-age adenosis). Unfortunately, decades may pass before the full toll is taken, and medical researchers feel that there will be potential latent effects on the DES-exposed offspring.
Researchers have found an explanation of why DES has a biologic effect on the cells of the embryo and the fetus: “DES does not bind with estrogen-bindings plasma proteins… which work to restrict the entry into cells of endogenous (maternal-created) estrogens. DES, by contrast, remains biologically unopposed and can freely enter cells, greatly increasing its biologic activity relative to naturally occurring estrogens.
During the first eight weeks of prenatal development, the cells of the embryo differentiate. The outer layer of cells will become the skin, the nervous system, and the sensory organs. The middle layer develops into the muscles, bones, and circulatory, excretory and reproductive systems. The inner layer of cells will become digestive and respiratory tracts and the internal glands and organs. During the next seven months, the systems and organs mature and grow.
Many who study DES exposure believe that it affected many body systems, not just the endocrine system. The ongoing story of The DES Tragedy continues…. Now into a third generation….
The DES exposed are still awaiting an apology from the pharmaceutical industry that created this medical disaster!
