    Cyclecross Baal

This year’s first cyclecross was at Baal in Belgium, part of the BPost Bank Trofee. Baal is the Belgian congregation of Sven Nys and Niels Alberts. Not present were Kevin Pauwels (sick, training in Spain) and UCI-leader Lars van der Haar (the young Dutchman does not compete in this trophy). This cyclecross is organized for the 15th time and eleven times won by the present worldchampion Sven Nys.

Some cyclists have changed this new year from team, like Rob Peeters and Sven Nys. This mostly means new shirt colours and new bikes. Sven now races on TREK: € 8,000 and 7 kg and a pressure of 1.3 bar. With disc brakes it even weights 7,6 kg.

Sven is still in a perfect condition (in contrary to his girl friend who fell sick this morning and Belgium champion Klaas Vantorhout who catched a cold and DNF) and from the start he takes the lead.

In the second round he takes the maximum of 15 bonification seconds. Former worldchampion Bart Wellens breaks his chain and loses two and a half minutes and DNF.

In round three the differences were getting larger and Rob Peeters is already on 10 seconds, followed by Tom Meeusen en Czech Champion Zdenek Stybar. Zdenek does his last cross for this month, because from tomorrow he goes back to the road. Halfway the cross (with four rounds to go) Sven is still in the lead, Rob at 27 seconds, Niels, Zdenek and Tom at 31 seconds, number sixth then is Thijs van Amerongen on 51 seconds.

With two rounds to go: Sven still first, Zdenek and Rob at 53”, Niels at 57”, Tom at 1’17”. Philipp Walsleben at 1’50” and Corné van Kessel at 2’00”.

The end results of Baal 2014:
    Sven Nys 1h03’39”
    Zdenek Stybar 51”
    Niels Albert 57”
    Rob Peeters 1’10”

    Philip Walsleben 2’20”
    Bart Aernouts 2’22”
    Corne van Kessel 2’27”
