    Pain-Free Resolutions!

     

    It is the 2nd of January, and no doubt that alot of us out there are getting started on those new years weight-loss and fitness resolutions. Are you one of them? If so, I want to first off say, well done for making a positive change in your lifestyle! This article is just for you. You are probably ready to get in that gym, and have these plans of hitting it hard... But, if you haven't seen much movement recently then you will be setting yourself up for big problems! Below are some top-tips to make sure your New Years Resolutions aren't cut short with an injury or being overwhelmed.

     

    *STRETCH! - I'm not just talking about before your workout, but also first thing in the morning, in the afternoon, and before bed. Even better, book yourself a Yoga class a couple times a week to gain the flexibility and awareness in your tightened body.

     

    *IF IT HURTS, STOP!! - Ever heard that old saying of "No pain, no gain"? This couldn't be further from the truth, my friend! When you are working out, then the specific muscle you are working on, should of course start to feel a bit of warming. This is normal, and good. But if you feel actual PAIN in joints, sharp pains, chest pains or any clicking, popping, or grinding when working out, then this is bad and you should stop immediately. Working through this, will undoubtedly lead to injury. These problems could be from a few different causes. In some cases, it could be that antagonist muscles are too weak (i.e. working on abs, but feeling pain in back... then the back needs strengthening too). Other possibilities are that you are either doing it wrong, or have a misalignment in your body. You should either book a session with a personal trainer to check your technique, or book a session with a Body Realignment therapist to get you straightened out.

     

    *DON'T FORGET YOUR MINERALS - Many of us give consideration to the amount of vitamins we take in, but not too many of us think about minerals. This is a big mistake! Most of us think of minerals as being necessary for strong bones and teeth, but minerals do so much more. Without proper mineral ratios we could not set into motion the properties and functions of enzymes, vitamins or amino acids. These elemental components are responsible for every activity in every cell of our bodies. When working out and sweating, you are going to lose alot of these. I personally like to soak in Epsom salt for 20 mins in a luke warm once a week to get some minerals back. This will get some mineral back into you, and help prevent stiffness in your muscles.

     

    *WATER! - Do you drink enough of it? A good way to figure out how much you should be drinking is to divide your body weight (in lbs) in half. The number you come up with is the number of ounces of water you should be drinking each day. Don't down this all at once, though. You should be sipping and drinking on this amount throughout your day for your body to get the best out of it.

     

    *LOVE IT! - Find an exercise routine that you genuinely enjoy! Let's face it... why is this your resolution for the 5th year in a row? What happened last year? More than likely, you got bored, unmotivated, and quit! Once you figure out what sort of exercise keeps you coming back, find a friend to join you. Having an "accountability" buddy makes you more likely to not let THEM down, even on days where you feel like letting yourself down.

     

    *DON'T OVER-COMPLICATE - I know you want to do it all, and you want to do it all Now!! But again, why are we here yet again? When you try and set yourself a new lifestyle based on diet AND exercise, this is going to be a huge change for you. You will be better off picking one to start with for 3 weeks and letting yourself get used to the major change. Then, once you add the other, it will fit in like a perfect puzzle piece into your life. Taking this approach will help to keep you from getting overwhelmed and giving up too soon.

     

    *REMEMBER YOUR FOCUS - Why are you doing this? Your main goal should always be to have a healthier body and life. If you focus on getting THESE results, you are guaranteed to succeed. When we focus on weight or inch loss, then we can easily be disheartened when the scale doesn't say what we want after the first week. But if we focus on the fact that we can now walk from our car to the office without getting out of breath any more, then we will keep it up! Don't worry, keep up the hard work and the rest WILL follow!
