I'll keep this quick but here in northeastern Illinois, we've already been hit with about a foot of snow. I hung out New Years day at my parents' house and took this which I thought was rather interesting. I noticed tufts of snow occasionally falling from the trees. As you can see from this picture, the snow we got was so light and fluffy that the tuft which fall would nearly be disintegrated by the time it reached the ground. We don't typically get snow like that but it was so cold we had scenes typical of mountain areas.
