    Brutal Weather can be Beautiful!

A polar air mass with some of the coldest temperatures in over 20 years descended on NE Iowa with a vengeance on Monday morning. As the title says "Brutal Weather can be Beautiful", especially in the winter. These are a couple pictures of the amazing sun dogs or rainbow type formations made when sunlight passes thru suspended ice crystals that I took near Hazleton, Iowa. I was dressed in multiple layers with a mask because at the time these pictures were taken because it was -22F with a windchill of -50F!! I could only stay out for about 3 minutes due to the extreme nature of the cold. These are some of the most vibrant and colorful sun dogs I have seen in many, many year. Mother Nature can be both brutal and beautiful at the same time!
