Polar Vortex on Lake Michigan - Time Lapse
According to the CNN Weather Unit, 'The polar vortex is a term for the upper-level winds that surround the poles, namely the northern pole. The polar vortex is a jet stream and it exists miles up in the atmosphere. The polar vortex is always there, it is not something that only happens when cold air outbreaks occur. Sometimes this vortex becomes distorted and displaced, and as a result, cold Arctic air spills out into more southern regions.' You can read more on CNN.com.
