18 Year Old Shot By Police In Front Of Parents
- zdan, CNN iReport producer
Around 1 o'clock on Sunday, January 5th, 2014 Mark Wilsey of Boiling Spring Lakes, North Carolina, called police for assistance with his 18 year old son, Keith Vidal who suffered from schizophrenia. They had called for assistance before to help with transport to medical facilities to get his medication adjusted. Keith was holding a small screwdriver, but was not an immediate threat to anyone, and was not trying to harm anyone. Vidal only weighs in around 90 to 100 lbs, 5'5" at best. Two Boiling Spring Lakes Police Officers had talked with him and had mostly diffused the situation when an officer from the Southport Police Department is reported to have entered the home and ordered that Keith be tased. "Murder. They murdered our son for no reason," Wilsey said. "Everything was going good, then this fat cop from Southport walks in the room, walks around the corner, says, 'We don't have time for this. Tase that kid now. Let's get him out of here.'" Wilsey stated that out of instinct of fear of being tased, Keith moved away from the officers. "The tasers hit him, he fell back. Two officers were on top of him. You know, he's got the little screwdriver. I mean, I would have went and got the screwdriver from him. I went to help, and I hear a shot,” Wilsey said. Wilsey then grabbed the officer as he was lining up to take another shot, preventing him from shooting again. Keith died from the gunshot wound on the floor of his home, in front of his family. His mother was treated for a breakdown at the scene. District Attorney Jon David was on the scene shortly following the shooting, and the State Bureau of Investigations is looking into the case. Meanwhile, the Wilsey/Vidal family is forced to plan a funeral for their son, who was not committing a crime, who was simply suffering from a mental illness. A small community is left looking at this incident, and trying to understand why someone who was so young and had so much potential was so viciously and maliciously ripped away from his family and loved ones by an officer that was sworn to protect and serve the members of the community. The officer involved has been put on paid administrative leave according to Southport Police Chief Jerry Dove. His name has been relased as Detective Byron Vassey. No other officers have been placed on leave. There was a news confrence at 2 pm on Monday, but the DA was staying tight lipped, and did not invite th family to the conference, however they showed up regardless, with signs, and pleas for justice for their son. To put a face to a name, this is Keith, who was talented, and meant the world to his family and friends.
