How To Fix Corrupt Outlook 2010 PST File If Scanpst.exe Fails

With Outlook email client, Microsoft has tried to keep the emailing experience absolutely simple yet advance. There is a data file that keeps a record of every email, contact, calendar, notes, and other items which is known as Personal Storage Folder (PST File). Any damage to the PST file will leave the entire data inaccessible and thus to deal with such circumstances, Microsoft provided Scanpst.exe utility (also known as Inbox Repair Tool) for help.

When Outlook is configured with a mail account, this application gets automatically installed in the system. Depending upon the version of Outlook and Windows used, location of Inbox Repair Tool in the system varies. This free built-in utility checks the structure of PST file and if there is any inconsistency or damage, it fixes it. Also, it verifies the header of PST file and repairs it if required. If there are problems that cannot be sorted out with this utility, it gets recorded in Scanpst log in Outlook ‘Deleted Items’ Folder.

To run this application, just browse for PST file against which the tool has to run and then enable the check-box for ‘Make backup of scanned file before repairing’. It is recommended to enable this option for following reasons:

    >> Data Loss Possibility: Sometimes while scanning PST, the application removes a damaged block of the file structure if it finds the solution appropriate. Therefore, if some important information is lost, the backup file is still available with hope of recovery.

    >> Works For Minor Issues: The application does not deal with upper-level object recovery, i.e. emails, contacts, calendars etc. It just work for lower-level objects and thus if the file is corrupted to high intensity, the process fails in between with errors.

Microsoft rendered this utility to fix minor issues that caused inconsistency in file but if it is unable to troubleshoot data inaccessibility issues, then the recommendation is to go for some third party solution. From online market, pick a reliable solution to work around.

Suggested Tool: There are number of potential solutions available online to fix corrupt Outlook 2010 PST file (Unicode and ANSI) that will help to recover emails, contacts, journals, tasks and calendars from PST file. From the various names, the most reliable one, which is affordable too is Outlook Recovery software. This solution comes with the benefit of multiple export options (PST to PST, EML and MSG) and PST splitting.
