Boiling Water Captured Freezing in -13 Degree Midwestern Air

As the Midwest continues its deep freeze, it opened the opportunity to conduct a science experiment on the concept that boiling water freezes faster than cold. Outside of La Crosse, Wisconsin, I decided to test this by shooting a series of images of boiling water being tossed up into the freezing air.
By not boiling the water too much, some of the images captured water droplets falling back to the ground, followed by a trail of freezing vapor. In an instant, most of the boiling “vaporized” into a mist of snow.
This concept of hot water freezing faster than cold is called the Mpemba effect as explained on the website Phys.org. The web site states “the Mpemba effect was first noted in the 4th century BC by Aristotle, and many scientists have noted the same phenomenon in the centuries since Aristotle’s time. It was dubbed the Mpemba effect in the 1960s when schoolboy Erasto Mpemba from Tanzania claimed in his science class that ice cream would freeze faster if it was heated first before being put in the freezer.”
These images were taken in a -31 degree wind chill.
