Orthodox Christians celebrate Christmas in Azerbaijan

CNN PRODUCER NOTE     Azerbaijani photographer AzizKarimov was in Baku's Cathedral of the Holy Myrrhbearers in the early hours of Tuesday morning to witness the city's Orthodox Christian community -- mainly Russians with some Azerbaijanis -- celebrate Orthodox Christmas, the date of which comes from the old Julian calendar. "The celebration of [Orthodox] Christmas in Azerbaijan every year embodies renewal, tranquility, solidarity, a sense of compassion and mercy," he said.
    - sarahbrowngb, CNN iReport producer

On January 7 at night the Orthodox churches in Azerbaijan held celebrations on the occasion of Christmas.

In the central Temple of Myrrhbearers the festive liturgy was performed by Bishop Alexander of Baku and Caspian.
The ceremony was attended by the Russian Ambassador to Azerbaijan Vladimir Dorokhin.

Among the participants of the ceremony were mostly Russian citizens who are orthodox in Azerbaijan, people from neighboring countries, as well as a small number of ethnic Azerbaijanis, who converted to Orthodoxy.
