    Lead by example

I have a 9-year-old daughter who has been told by doctors for that past three years that she was overweight. Our house is stripped of junk, and we rarely go out to eat, but her weight issues never went away. This past fall she had another check-up and again I was lectured about her weight. "She needs to be more active" is what her pediatrician told me. My daughter has never liked being active, so I knew it was going to be a struggle. I bought her a kid's workout. We'd go for walks and sometimes I'd get her to run with me. While she did these things, it was not something she enjoyed doing. I am an independent BeachBody coach and started my own fitness journey in March 2013. I follow a clean diet, and therefore my two daughters do as well. Many people use the, "They won’t eat anything else" excuse for what they feed their kids. If you have a house full of fruits, veggies, and healthy options, they will eat it. I lead by example and hope that my children follow. I recently started a new in-home program called Les Mills Combat that is a mixture of six different martial arts. My 9-year-old and I do it together every night after I get home from work. I don't have to ask, she WANTS to do it. These workouts range from 30 to 60 minutes. Last week she announced she wants to become a Combat instructor and do BeachBody videos. She has lost weight and built muscle, and eats better than most adults do. It's all because she watched her mom and chose to follow my lead. It is true, that parents MUST lead by example. Our childrens' health is too important to address later. It is important to teach healthy habits NOW. Being healthy now gives them the better chance at leading a healthy and happy future.
