Fernando Bermudez Imprisoned 18 years for Murder

CNN PRODUCER NOTE     Longtime iReporter and journalism student Marcus Harun was so inspired by hearing Fernando Bermudez speak at a college lecture series, he wanted to hear more about the exonoree’s story. He interviewed Bermudez, a man who was wrongfully convicted in 1992 of murdering a 16-year-old boy in New York. Bermudez spent 18 years in prison, but maintained his innocence. He was exonerated in 2009 and is now a guest speaker for the Innocence Project.

In the interview, Bermudez shares the story of how prison changed him and how it led to him meeting and marrying his wife, Crystal. He also had three children with her while he served his time.

“[Bermudez] went in there at my age and came out 18 years later. He didn’t do anything though,” said Harun. “I thought the story was remarkable.”
