    Blue Light, A Very Modern Menace

     
    Modernity has solved many problems. We live longer, we eat better and the perils of nature no longer have us running for our lives. And let’s face it, we have a lot of fun entertaining ourselves with iPads, movies and Friday Night Lights.

    But one of the very things that has made modern life so enjoyable may be making us sicker and slower. Artificial light--which has allowed man to conquer his surroundings, may be the reason we’re losing sleep and becoming a nation of blurry-eyed pseudo-zombies.

    Artificial light, and in particular fluorescent light (CFLs) and light produced by electronic devices like tablets and computers, emits a type of UV light called Blue Light, that has been shown to be very damaging to humans and animals. Blue light is turning out to be one of the serious hazards of modern life.

    Blue Light is defined as that part of the invisible spectrum which ranges from 500nm to 381nm range. It has long been established that UV light can cause cancers like skin cancer, and that it is directly related to many eye problems such as cataracts and macular degeneration. But research conducted by Harvard University has now concluded that Blue Light is responsible for many other problems in our lives from insomnia to migraines and sexual dysfunction.

    Blue Light is responsible for interrupting our circadian rhythm, the natural cycle of sleep and wakefulness. Research has shown that Blue Light confuses our bodies into believing that we should be awake when we really need to be asleep. This is one of the reasons cases of insomnia have reached epidemic proportions.

    But Blue Light is even more insidious. Blue Light is perceived by the eye even if the eye lid is closed. Blue LIght reduces the amount of melatonin our bodies produce, not only making it difficult to sleep, but making it more difficult to fight off disease. Blue Light used outdoors in flood lights and outdoor lighting confuses nocturnal creatures like Sea Turtles, reeking havoc on their sleep and wake cycles, too.

    So, while living in a modern world is still a wonderful thing, it might be time to rethink our constant exposure to Blue Light. Yes, we all love Starbucks, getting from LA to New York in one day and indoor plumbing. But the fallout from the Blue Light Modern Menace may eventually be our undoing.
