My brother just needed help and now he is dead

CNN PRODUCER NOTE     Mark Ryan Wilsey, the stepbrother of Keith Vidal, wants the world to know his family’s side of the story. On Sunday, Vidal, an 18-year-old with schizophrenia, was shot and killed by police in Boiling Spring Lakes, North Carolina. Vidal’s family says they called police for help when their son was having a schizophrenic episode. “My brother needed help and now he is dead,” Wilsey said in his emotional video statement. Wilsey was not there when his stepbrother was shot, but wanted to speak on behalf of his family.

A group representing police officers said the North Carolina detective justifiably shot Vidal because he believed another officer's life was in danger, offering an account vastly different from that of the late teen's outraged family. The North Carolina Police Benevolent Association laid out its version of what happened in Boiling Spring Lakes in a statement issued Wednesday, three days after Keith Vidal was killed.

CNN continues to pursue this story. Read the original story on CNN, or read the iReport from a family friend that brought this story to CNN’s attention.
