This iReport is part of an assignment:
Macedonia the country not the City
The Republic of Macedonia, is a country located in the central Balkan peninsula in Southeast Europe. It is one of the successor states of the former Yugoslavia, from which it declared independence in 1991.
I never had a dream before about going to Southeast Europe to study . My dream like most of my generation was to go back to USA finish my associate degree then transfer to a big university specifically CSU.That was after I already did one year at Butte College,CA covered by a scholarship from Fulbright 2010.
when I went back to Egypt June 2011 after a successful year in US, I was lucky to find a job by the help of my best friend which was a great opportunity for me to practice what I have studied. But still I wanted deep deep inside my heart to finish school or to be honest, go back to US that is why I started searching for scholarships, Of cause full one since I was completely broke and not welling to pay for school (free is good).
One of the scholarships I have applied for, was in the republic of Macedonia. by that time the only idea I know about Macedonia was it just the place where the Alexander the great came from although I have done Bachelor in History before but you know the free education how is it in countries like Egypt.
By September 2011 I got a respond from the ministry of education in Macedonia that I was accepted in the scholarship for the year 2011. I felt so happy while I am reading the email. I guess I was ready to leave Egypt to anywhere just to leave.
It was extremely fast the procedures to get the Macedonia Visa -exactly I need a visa to Enter Macedonia-. by the end of September I arrived Macedonia. was not my first time to travel but the first in a country that does not speak English. anyway my school is located in a city called Ohrid about 3 hours away from Skopje the capital.
My first impression about my life here was not that good since I was comparing all the time what I have here with what I have had in US. it was to much complaining. So I gave up with the school and decided to go back to Egypt as soon as the first semester ends. It was a great time for me since I had the chance to explore around Ohrid meeting couch surfing, getting involve in some NGO activities like the Red Cross in Ohrid. My respond to those who ask me, Are you studying? was "absolutely No I am here to have fun".
The thing that helps me a lot to have so much fun was that I had a classmate from Latvia, she was almost in the same situation as me but she had longer experience than me with hiking and hitchhiking so we started exploring Macedonia together with some other friends.
I stayed for along time struggling with what I am doing here. I was really really lost until I found someone who gave me motivation and became the reason for me to stay in Macedonia and go back to school. Everything in my life changed more than 380 degrees so fast ;) after Having someone who cares about me, giving me a hand to move up and get back to myself.
I started over with the school and by the end of my first year I succeeded to passed most of my classes and here I am in the third year, almost done.
Would love to thank everybody I have met in Macedonia specially those in the red cross who opened their door for us to be part of the wonderful activities they do for the community very glad to attend First Aid course with you Mladen Bozinovski. Hopefully after I learn Macedonian I will be more active I promise.
That is it for today till the next episode.
Hope you like the pictures
I don't know why my hand is shaking as I am writing.
