    Cuba’s vintage cars

    More from whoisvinod

Old but beautiful and very useful

CNN PRODUCER NOTE     whoisvinod went to Cuba on a people-to-people exchange last year and said he asked one of the old car's owners how many miles to the gallon he got, 'and he mentioned that he would get 5 miles to the gallon if they were lucky.' He was impressed with the pride in ownership that many car owners showed.
    - dsashin, CNN iReport producer

It is 7 in the morning on Christmas day and the sun has not yet decided to show up from behind the clouds but across the street from the Capitol building in Cuba a bevy of beauties are getting ready to put on a show. These are cars from the 60's/70's that are seen only in old movies or in the garages of serious collectors such as Jay Leno, however these are the work horses that keep Havana running. These are ubiquitous and are used by the locals to ride from place to place in Havana and the trip could cost as little as 10 Cuban Pesos (about 40c US). The best of these beauties are reserved for foreign tourists who can ride in these cars for a few hours to get a tour of Havana. These cars are are a symbol of Cuba as much as the London taxis or the NY cabs.
