One hour bus ride away from Kaohsiung train station, DongGang (https://goo.gl/maps/OnZJA ) is a small fishing town known for Tuna fishing and Wooden Wong ship burning ceremony which is held every three years. During the 1940’s when the Pacific war escalated, the nearby DaPen salt water lagoon was a Japanese navy sea plane base. Now it is a designated national recreation area (https://goo.gl/maps/daWGm) with a 20 km around lake bike route and sailing port. In the township of DongGang, Japanese built a living quarter for the staff of sea plane base. The Japanese style residences in the living quarter are considered worthy of historic preservation. One of the old residence is now turned into a specialty restaurant serving home-made foods. Dockside eating place serving sea foods are around the harvested fish exchange market. Savoring freshly caught sea foods while watching the sunset and ferry returning from the off-shore island Xiao-Liu-Chou is a best pass-time of town’s people.
