    Kelly Thomas Verdict Came In

CNN PRODUCER NOTE     On Monday, January 13, a jury acquitted two former Fullerton, California, police officers on trial in the beating death of Kelly Thomas, a mentally ill and homeless man. Fullerton resident KCRep has followed the case since shortly after Thomas' death in July 2011 and was in the Santa Ana courtroom to hear the verdict. Read more on CNN.

I was in the courtroom when the not guilty verdicts were read. The room was packed to capacity, there were 12 sheriff deputies there standing along the aisles and in the back. When I noticed the amount of deputies my heart told me the verdict would be not guilty. Before the verdicts were read, the judge told us there would be a lot of unhappy people and a lot of happy people. Trust me, there were a lot more unhappy people after the verdict was read. Not guilty on two counts for Ramos, not guilty on two counts for Cicinelli, I just hung my head and cried.

At the press conference, Cathy Williams Thomas couldn't stop crying. Ron Thomas told the media how he felt. He said: "All the things they said about him were so untrue," meaning the defense lawyers. "What this means is all of us need to be afraid ... police officers ... can beat us, kill us, whatever they want. ... It has been proven today they will get away with it ... He was standing there breathing healthy, when they were through with him, he was dead. Beat to a bloody pulp. And they didn’t do it? They’re not guilty of killing him?"

Someone asked Ron what he thought convinced the jury. He replied said: "I think it’s the continuous onslaught by the defense to interrupt the district attorney ... The objections were nonstop by Barnett," referring to former Fullerton police officer Manuel Ramos' attorney, John Barnett.

Cathy was asked about the verdict and she said: "As Kelly’s mother … I’m just horrified … I guess it’s legal to go out and kill now. He was so innocent. It just isn’t fair at all. They murdered my son and they get away with it.”

Supporters of Kelly Thomas range in the thousands world wide. The world should be saddened by this verdict but the jury has spoken. My concern is for Cathy and Ron Thomas. How will they be able to accept what happened to their son Kelly. Justice was not done.

The other cop, Wolfe, will not have to face a trial, according to the District Attorney, who fought for this family, because it would be mute.  The charges were dropped.

Justice was truly blind on Jan. 13th, 2014 in Santa Ana, Calif.

Pictured is Ron and Cathy I took at the press conference. I did a video but it's too long and won't load.
