Plumbing Emergency? Got You Covered.
This is a situation that can quickly move from annoyance to family disaster. A burst pipe, leaky flange, seepage from melting snow or a heavy rain can soon turn a basement into a graveyard for family photos. Too often these priceless mementos wind up in cardboard boxes stacked on the floor in the basement. While cardboard is wonderful for packing during a move, it also is a great wick for moving water from a concrete floor throughout the contents of a box. There are some easy solutions that can help you avoid water damage to family photos or any other delicate objects stored below ground level.
A simple set of shelves made from 2 x 4's and plywood can cost less than $100.00 and provide all the protection required. Most cases of water in the basement are not the result of massive flooding, but rather small or medium leaks or seepage from outdoors during rain or spring melt that are largely managed by existing floor drains. the problems occur when the low levels of water spread across the floor, wetting boxes and containers.
An even simpler solution that shelving are wooden pallets. Available for free at many locations, by simply laying a row of pallets in the basement, the 4-6 inches of elevation needed is instantly created, affording a level of protection that just might be enough.
Providing that initial protection will help stave off immediate disaster, but the problem still needs to be fixed.
