Gabriola, British Columbia
What does iPhones, FB's & "Bring back my Highway" have in common...??
Networking, Community-Solidarity, Demonstrations, Activism -
British Columbia (BC) Ferries are cutting 6,900 sailings per year on 16 minor routes...
& raising the fares.
On Saturday, Jan. 18th, the entire Sunshine Coast of B.C. (Canada) protested against the ferry cuts & Gabriola islanders showed 'em a little old-fashioned solidarity !
Coastal B.C. Residents organized "The B.C. Marine Highways" which is a grassroots' campaign organization - to educate British Columbians about the significant role B.C. Ferries plays in coastal communities.
They wish to shed light on the unreasonable series of cuts in service and the unsustainable growth in fares that is devastating these rural coastal communities.
The B.C. Ferries is an integral part of the marine highway system.
So far 29 different communities stand together in solidarity against the ferry cuts !
No doubt more demonstrations are on the way -
