Venezuelans turn to yoga calling for peace and nonviolence

Due to the astounding murder rates in Venezuela (nearly 25000 in 2013 according to unofficial sources), the Venezuelan yoga community organized a massive yoga activity yesterday, Saturday Jan. 18.

The meeting, originally planned only for the capital city of Caracas, soon spread to other cities in the country: Maracaibo, Valencia, Mérida, San Cristobal, Margarita, Barquisimeto. Using only social media, the organizers were also able to contact and successfully set up similar and simultaneous activities overseas: Miami (FL), Weston (FL), Denver (CO), Madrid (Spain), Barcelona (Spain), Mexico City, Panama City, were among the many cities that joined this activity.

The goal of the organization Cada Vida Importa (Each Life Matters) is a call for consciousness, peace and nonviolence in today's murder-ridden Venezuela, using yoga and silence as means of peaceful but significant protest.

According to the organizers, more than 800 people attended the Caracas yoga intervention on Saturday, January 18.
