'Roots and war' by JadeYu Fhang

„A kingdom for a skull“, said Ervare, the curator to the artist JadeYu Fhang as she told him that the skull of the woman on the horse is made in mesh. The skull therefore can be seen only by a mesh supporting 3D viewer proper. “Mesh is forbidden by the Prim Gods of Egypt” he added. The artist assumed it was said lightly by Ervare, means the one knowing in Afrikaans. “Ervare, I like your humor”, JadeYu mentioned. Nevertheless ‘Roots and war’, the installation that will be presented first time in opensimulator on Tuesday 21, 2014, 22.00 h CET [= 13.00 PDT, 21.00 GMT] does not have any humor. There is no space left for humor on the installation JadeYu Fhang has worked out. She came in the 60s as a refugee from Algeria to France where she is working now reflecting the world around as well as looking back at her roots by creating art installations.

A skull in mesh, I would as a traditionalist Avatar not be able to see, is now in the revised version of the artwork just a trunk. Will the sword somewhere placed above the head of the woman be used? Was it already used so the head became a trunk? It looks like a woman with two heads – one born one unborn – and lot of roots growing in her body controls the sword. Or is also this woman a victim?
As I was visiting the scene an Avatar approached in the shape of a blue skeleton wearing two heads. He was an artist in disguise and said that he has two heads in case the one that is treated as part of the skin gets eaten by a 3D viewer running on different server settings. We know it all from the iCNN Report ‘It´s all experimental’ that an Avatar can lose all clothes if moving between worlds with different simulator versions. Then indeed the two heads solution fits well as an artistic work around.

About 40 years ago as I made my first steps into graphical software design the discussion about ‘error free software’ was just at the beginning and a theme in math and informatics. Now we know for sure, that software above a certain level of complexity will be never free of errors. Software has become an entity like a biological life form. It might be a better wording to say “has to be treated like one”. ‘The mentalist’ I am called sometimes by young programmers or “go to the old man if you don’t find the glitch”. I never find the error of course, I suggest like a doctor what can be done so the error does not come any longer to the surface. Luckily I am in art so it is often easy to find a work around if you change the view.

So why not to add a second head when one can go missing and call it a concept?

In 20 years you might not laugh on a second skull as then in Avatars there will be emotions embedded as part of the code. Then a second head might turn to a severe diagnosis. So you are lucky now and you can get without any risk a copy of this blue skeleton Avatar having one extra head in case you need one.

Performance on Tuesday, January 21, 2014, 22.00 h Paris time at RIFT Horizon – via grid Metropolis [-> http://hypergrid.org]
