African Students Association Fights against African Stereotypes

This winter, the African Students Association of Ithaca College released a social media campaign entitled: "The Real Africa: Fight the Stereotype".

They decided to create this campaign because of their shared experiences of being asked silly questions like, "do you speak African?" or having people refer to Africa as a country rather than a whole continent.

With these experiences in mind, they asked their members to choose common stereotypes about Africa and challenge them with this vibrant photo campaign.

"Our campaign aims to educate and create awareness about our beautiful continent. It is our hope that people will spread our message, whether it is by liking, sharing or tweeting our photos," said Rita Bunatal '16, PR for the African Students Association. "The simplest actions can create awareness and we are hoping to do this not only campus-wide, but also world-wide. We are nearing 150+ retweets and favorites on Twitter and are hoping to make this campaign an even bigger success."

This campaign was shot and edited by Mariah Boucher, Ithaca College '17.
