My boyfriend and I went backcountry camping at the Sage Creek Basin in the Badlands National Park, South Dakota. We set up our tent just after sunset unknowingly near a bison trail. We woke up the next morning to some grunting noises and peered out the tent to see a massive bison about 150 feet away. Once the bison made his way safely farther up the hill I emerged from the tent and grabbed my camera to take some photos of the sunrise in the grassy field. While snapping away, I heard the much familiar grunting noise and soon saw the appearance of another bison making his way up the trail. This picture perfectly captures the landscape, wildlife, sunrise, and our camping surprise in the Badlands.
