Patea's Derelict Grader Cool Store Complex (New Zealand)

CNN PRODUCER NOTE     New Zealand based designer snepo1975 had often traveled past this derelict cheese storage building in Patea as a child and wondered about its fate. Years later, and with camera in hand, he went out to the building to capture some of its lost glory. "It was an eerie experience for me exploring the building on my own, which added to the creative experience," he said. Photos three and four are artistic Photoshop composites he developed after being inspired by his site visit.

My name is Aaron Openshaw and I am an artist/designer who utilises DSLR photography and Adobe Photoshop for my creative work. For many years I had driven through Patea, in New Zealand, and driven pass this derelict complex on the Patea river. I had always found myself to be fascinated by it but never really knew what it was except that it was near or part of the derelict Patea Freezing Works (Freezing Works is the New Zealand term for a Slaughter House or Meat Works) which was shut down in the early 1980s. The Freezing Work complex had burnt down a few years ago, a victim of arson, and due to asbestos been on site the building remains were removed. Earlier this year I decided to explore the complex and document it with my new Nikon DSLR. I did this on my own and found the exploration to be an exciting but at the same time eerie experience. As a creative person I found the complex and its spaces to be inspiring. At the time, I looked forward to using my photographs for creative Photoshop work. Upon returning home in Wellington; Patea is a three hour drive away. I found myself to be fascinated by the complex and its unknown history. This spurred me into researching the history of the complex on line where I found out that the complex was the historic Patea Cheese Grading Cool Stores and Port. The following links contain some history of the site:

For creative people who are looking for inspiring subjects to explore, research and prompt creative activity, I strongly recommend exploring derelict complexes such as the Patea Cheese Grader Cool Stores located at: -39° 45' 38.39", +174° 29' 6.43"
