    Knight on fire

CNN PRODUCER NOTE     Jon1001 shot these images of the protests that have caused tumult and led to at least four deaths in Kiev, Ukraine early Thursday morning. A truce was announced later on Thursday. 'It’s a protester at the “frontline” on Hrushevsky street – the burning tires separate the protester from the police. I don’t know exactly why he is standing alone at this particular spot, but earlier I saw him throw some tires at the fire. The symbolism struck me – as if he is looking at the ruins of the Yanukovych regime (although I believe it will survive at least until the next elections). People were throwing stones and Molotov cocktails all around, but his calmness struck me – a warrior reflecting in the middle of chaos (the police did not respond by throwing anything back at this time and they could not be seen because of the smoke and fire).'

This is a picture taken shortly after midnight 23.01.2014 at Hrushevsky street in Kiev. It shows a protester with a helmet and a shield, resembling a crusader in a circle of fire. The picture is taken on the “frontline” on Hrushevsky street – the burning tires separate the protester from the police. His calmness at this point struck me – people were throwing stones and Molotov cocktails all around - a warrior reflecting in the middle of chaos - perhaps symbolically looking at the ruins of the Yanukovich regime.
