CNN PRODUCER NOTE Brooklyn resident fsimon14 says before the fire started the snow was falling gently in Union Square, New York, on January 21. Then she noticed white smoke coming out of a manhole cover, and she heard a rumbling sound emanating from the ground. 'Then it quickly -- within seconds -- turned to black smoke and a loud explosive sound and fire shot up into the air about 20 feet,' she said. She was there for the whole event from beginning to end, and she even witnessed the fire engines arrive shortly afterwards. 'I was mostly shocked and surprised to see the scene go so quickly from calm to chaos... the man unloading his truck -- you can see the dollies -- appeared as surprised as well,' she added. 'I don't know exactly what started the fire ,but some folks thought it might have to do with the salt and water dripping down into electrical wiring.' She says as far as she could tell no one was hurt at the scene.
