St.Kitts –Nevis Prime Minister not confident of Election Victory. Calls on supporters to do more work
The Prime Minister of St.Kitts-Nevis has declared that his ruling Labour Party Government is not ready for elections. The declaration was made at a rally in the St.Kitts Capital Basseterre to celebrate the 4th anniversary of the Labour Government’s 4th term in office.
The longest serving Prime Minister in the region has been dodging an over one year long Motion of No Confidence as well as a call for elections. The Leader of the Opposition and Deputy Premier of Nevis Hon. Mark Brantley filed a Motion of No Confidence on December 11th 2012. A Motion where 6 of the 5 elected members of the St.Kitts-Nevis Parliament have given notice to the Governor General that they will support , once it is heard and debated.
PM Douglas through the Speaker of the National Assembly has failed to bring the Motion to Parliament for debate for over one year despite many calls from civic organizations such as the Chamber of Industry and Commerce, the Christian Council, The Evangelical Association, The Bar Association as well as local and regional luminaries such as former OECS Judge Brian Alleyne, Lawyer Charles Wilkin QC, Leader of the St.Vincent and Grenadines Opposition Arnhim Eustace, former Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda Lester Bird, Former Governor of St.Kitts-Nevis Sir Probyn Inniss among others.
Prime Minister Douglas, who is being labeled by his opponents as illegitimate , has given various reasons for his failure to have the Motion of No Confidence debated and Elections called. He has cited the fact that there is a matter before the court with regards to the Motion. A notion that has been rubbished by Charles Wilkin and Emile Ferdinand QC’s and the SKN legal fraternity who have stated that the matter in court does not prevent the motion from being heard.
With Prime Minister Douglas’ announcement to his supporters at the party’s rally suggesting that there will be No election until his Labour Party is assured of victory suggests to political observers that the 4 term Prime Minister is not ready for an election and is not as confident as his FULL CONFIDENCE political slogan would suggest.
In his presentation to hundreds of his supporters Dr Douglas said ““We are pleased with the support you have given us over the last year in particular and for the last four years, and for the last 19 years that we have been in government. We are here to do your work. We said we will work for you. Nobody, nothing can prevent us from working for you………….we have found people who will work for you. Men, young dynamic men, who have come about as a result of Labour’s Springtime and are now ready to serve and work for you. I ain’t gon call no election until I know every single one of them going win!”
Dr Douglas also pleaded with and encouraged his supporters to do much more work to ensure victory and to ensure everyone in their household is registered. He also declared that it was his labour supporters who are keeping back the elections by not working hard enough to make him comfortable enough to call the elections where he is assured of victory.
“…That is why I say it is you who are keeping back the elections, because you need to do much more work. We are working for you, but what about you working for yourself? You got to register your children…every single one of them. Who is not registered must be registered,” the controversial leader stated.
Since the filing of the No Confidence Motion over 13 months ago the Dr Denzil Douglas led administration began a “FULL CONFIDENCE” campaign which suggested the party’s readiness for elections and the electorate’s confidence in the administration. The Opposition Team UNITY led by former Senior Minister Dr. Timothy HARRIS have been stating that Dr. Douglas’ failure to debate the Motion of No Confidence and call elections is a clear indication that he is not confident about winning .
Recent polls by Jamaican Don Anderson have shown an almost 70% favorability rating for a UNITY Government and Dr. Timothy Harris as the next Prime Minister. Team UNITY which comprises three major political parties in the CCM, PAM and the PLP controls 6 of the 11 seats in Parliament and if the recent polls holds true the Opposition Team UNITY will easily win the eventual polls with a clear majority of at least 9 of the 11 seats in Parliament.
