    Beautifully Frozen Bubbles

CNN PRODUCER NOTE     Nature photographer Candice88 asked her husband to help her with a little experiment this morning: photographing bubbles as they freeze. The Front Royal, Virginia, couple practiced for a bit before the photographer was able to snap the shutter quickly enough to capture the frozen orbs. "The bubbles would automatically start forming crystal patterns on them as you can see in the pictures," she said. That is, when the wind was cooperating! "But when it did work, it only took less than a minute for them to completely freeze. Some would stay frozen for hours and some would get blown away or popped by the wind gusts that were ranging from 10-20 mph."

Frigid temperatures have returned here in Virginia bringing temps as low as 8 degrees. Temperatures this low are perfect conditions to freeze bubbles! With help from my husband creating the bubbles for me, I watched the freezing process begin and quickly took pictures. Crystal formations composed on the bubbles within seconds and froze completely in less than a minute. The wind made it difficult to keep the bubbles from breaking but with several attempts we managed to get some good ones. Beautiful to look at and fun to try!
