American music from Detroit to Finland by the band Detroit - rhythm & blues with country influences
A rhythm & blues band that started up with Roland Wilson, native of Detroit, Michigan. Roland Wilson moved across the Atlantic to the City of Turku in Finland. The founder has kept the good sound and creates a remarkable music together with drummer and producer Christer Karjalainen.
Roland Wilson was born in Detroit, MI in a family with a strong country music heritage. His father Art Wilson was a country singer with the Tumbleweed Ramblers. The family had moved from Memphis to Detroit, where Roland grew up and absorbed the music of that city. In 1973 he went into the military service and was shipped to Germany as a radio operator. There he met a Finnish woman, and subsequently moved to Finland. He now lives in the town of Raisio outside the city of Turku.
He started the band Detroit in 1989, together with Christer Karjalainen, a Finnish native and former professional drummer, and a group of other players. The band´s musical roots can be found in Motown, Stax and Memphis, with influences from artists such as Steve Cropper, Booker T and the MGs, Buddy Guy, Otis Rush, The Allman Brothers, etc. The band´s music is mostly written by Wilson, and also contains influences from country music. Some tunes are actually country tunes done in a slightly different way...as can be heard on their fourth album named "IV".
Detroit has performed at prestigious festivals such as the Ruisrock Festival in Turku, the Rauma Blues festival, the Puistoblues Festival, and the DBTL Festivals in Turku, and clubs around Southern Finland.
The band is now into its sixth line-up, with Roland Wilson (vocals and guitar), Judo Jalava (keyboards and vocals), Teijo Saarinen (bass), and Christer Karjalainen (drums). This version of the band is now using the name Detroit Rhythm & Blues Band, so as not to be confused with other bands using somewhat similar names...
The band has recently released their fifth album, called "Back To The Motor City". As all other albums, this was recorded at the drummer´s studio KC Sound. The music is pretty diverse, containing blues, elements from jazz, some slightly funky stuff, rock, and even pop, while the album "IV" also contained country elements, as in Wilson´s tune "Our Friends". "The Great University of Hard Knocks", also by Wilson, is actually a country tune done in a slightly different way.
Roland Wilson and his band are highly appreciated in Finland. Still, the music scene has changed pretty much, so the band does not perform in public that often. Detroit is nevertheless continuing to record new material, as Wilson is writing new songs with interesting stories.
As an Editor for CNN Ireport, and A CUSTOMER at K.C. SOUND STUDIO In Turku, I will recommend this BAND and their MUSIC from The Bottom Of My Heart. THEY are great, You sure won´t fall asleep when they perform for you.
