Online Schooling Helped My Physical Therapy Assistant

I have Scheuermann's disease, which is a disease that affects the spinal column. This condition is usually associated with younger boys, but it isn't unheard of in females. In my case, I wasn't diagnosed until 2007 after I had one of my sons.

I went into my postpartum appointment and told a doctor that my upper back was hurting. She did some manipulation on my spine and sent me for an x-ray, CT scan, and nuclear scan. Not long after the battery of tests was done, I got a call with the diagnosis.

For most people, Scheuermann's disease isn't painful. My spine usually doesn't bother me unless I am pregnant or carrying one of my children a lot, such as when I have a newborn. I am lucky because I haven't had to have any surgery or aggressive treatment for the condition.

When I was first diagnosed, my doctor prescribed physical therapy. Those first sessions were difficult. The physical therapy assistant and I got to know each other through my tears. She went to one of the physical therapy assistant schools online that provided an accredited course so she could help get her family out of a difficult financial spot.

During my sessions with her, I learned a lot of moves that still help me to deal with the pain of Scheuermann's disease without having to turn to medications. Some of the things that she learned in school were techniques that were new to the physical therapist working with me.

I have since moved away from the area where that physical therapy office is located, but that physical therapy assistant and I still keep in touch. As she learns about new ways to help people with Scheuermann's disease, or any back condition, she lets me know. The experience with her and our lasting friendship has proven to me that online schools can properly train people in the medical field. In some instances, online schooling can be a lifesaver. Without online schooling, Brenda never would have been able to become a physical therapy assistant who could have touched my life because she wouldn't have had time to take classes while caring for her young twins.
