    Lake Superior Ice Caves

CNN PRODUCER NOTE     cinders23 and her daughter, Elizabeth, embarked on an eight-hour drive to see the Lake Superior ice caves in northern Wisconsin on Saturday, February 1, 2014. Despite the 15-degree weather, which, this iReporter states, is actually balmy for Wisconsin, everyone was excited to see the ice caves. "It's been five years since people were allowed on Lake Superior to safely walk to the caves," she said.

According to a local police officer, roughly 7-10,000 people waited in line to see the columns of ice that had formed. "This may have been a once-in-a-lifetime chance," she said, "it was totally worth the eight-hour drive up there!" The first image was featured as CNN's Travel Photo of the Day for October 6, 2014.

It was an eight hour drive to Bayfield, WI, and the ice caves of Lake Superior. For the first time in five years the lake froze over enough to walk out to the caves. It was a balmy 15F and, despite the two-mile trek to see them, people of all ages came out by the thousands to see Mother Nature's glorious winter gift.
