Philip Seymour Hoffman’s Final Red Carpet Interviews At Sundance Film Festival

CNN PRODUCER NOTE     Chris Barrett told me, 'When I heard Philip Seymour Hoffman's film was premiering at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival, I rushed over to the film premiere of ‘God's Pocket.’ I got my spot on the red carpet to film, and instead of just filming a single interview with Hoffman, I followed him along the red carpet for fifteen minutes, watching each of his interviews. I was so excited to be so close to one of the greatest actors of our generation, or maybe even ever. He didn't look well at Sundance, his skin color was very pale, but he wasn't disheveled as some media was reporting. He was dressed very stylish and he answered each of the questions in depth with the reporters on the red carpet. Yesterday, my friend shouted from the other room, that there is a rumor that Hoffman had passed away. I didn't think it was true, but I saw the initial reports going live, and I was in shock and saddened. He passed away way too early.'
    - hhanks, CNN iReport producer

I filmed Philip Seymour Hoffman on January 17, 2014 speaking to all the media on the red carpet premiere at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival of his film God’s Pocket.

“The fear of missing out left me 20 years ago.” – Philip Seymour Hoffman

“It’s (God’s Pocket) a film about a man who is faced by an adult decision ultimately and he grows up. It’s not about adolescence it’s about a guy who has to deal with being an adult and It’s hard. He’s living with a world that is pretty shady and he grows up.”

Talking about his film characters: “…eventually you come to a day and say this is really difficult. Sometimes you think things will be easy, then you think it isn’t easy at all.”

Talking about the God’s Pocket character: “He’s my age and I think he’s dealing with issues that have to do with issues being middle-aged. You realize some choices you made along the way have to change or else you’re just going to kind of stay in the dark.”

Philip Seymour Hoffman’s family statement: “We are devastated by the loss of our beloved Phil and appreciate the outpouring of love and support we have received from everyone. This is a tragic and sudden loss and we ask that you respect our privacy during this time of grieving. Please keep Phil in your thoughts and prayers.”
